Many people are feared injured following a stampede that occurred at a naval base in Malad in Mumbai. The incident took place on Friday morning when many candidates had assembled there for a recruitment drive.
According to reports, things spiralled out of control after more than 6,000 candidates gathered at INS Hamla. The expected crowd was to be around 4,000. As the crowd swelled, people tried to push their way through the gate.
The police are said to have used batons to try and control the crowd. According to the navy, two people have been injured and are undergoing treatment.
According to an NDTV report, the Navy issued a statement, which read, “The response was overwhelming and crowd control created a bit of confusion in the early hours, which was subsequently handled very efficiently by the local police and Navy officials.”
