If any person is found driving a vehicle in an inebriated state, then cops will not only take action against him or her but will also crack the whip against the bar where the person had consumed liquor. The Thane police conducted a meeting on Friday with bar owners of Thane, Kalyan, Dombivli and Ulhasnagar regarding the same. The Mumbai police is planning to conduct a similar meeting in the island city soon.

As part of the meeting, the Thane police called around 90 bar owners to the police commissioner’s office and told them that they should follow stringent measure while serving alcohol to people. “If we find anybody driving a vehicle in an inebriated state, we will first ask him if s/he has a permit for drinking. If anybody is found drinking without a permit and the bar had served him or her liquor, we will take action against the bar,” said Pulkeshan Vyankatesh Mathadhikari, assistant commissioner of police, Thane Traffic division.
“We have issued bar owners notices under 149 of Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, to prevent cognisable offences,” said a senior officer from the Traffic department of the Thane police on condition
of anonymity.
The Thane police has also asked bar owners to make alternate transport arrangements such as taxis and auto rickshaws for drunk patrons to ensure that they reach home safely.
