What was supposed to be a victory lap of sorts for the Khar police, turned out to be a shameful display when one learnt at a press conference to announce the arrest of a robber, that he had been beaten and his arm broken as retribution for hurting a policeman.
On Friday, a press conference was arranged in the Deputy Commissioner of Police's office, to announce the arrest of Chauhan (full name not revealed), a member of what policemen refer to as the Phase Pardhi gang. Phase Pardhi is also the name of the tribal community to which he belongs. Chauhan appeared with his arm in a sling at the press meet.
Although policemen say he fractured his arm after slipping in the lock-up the previous night, sources reveal otherwise. On September 1, a policeman trying to nab Chauhan had broken his arm.
That night, two policemen on a bike, Subash Bhosale and Anil Tadvi, had reportedly tried to stop a suspicious-looking Chauhan who was accompanied by Maruti on a bike. In the ensuing scuffle, Bhosale's left arm accidentally came under Chauhan's bike's rear wheel. Chauhan and Maruti then fled the scene. The police managed to trace Chauhan, along with another two accomplices, Vishram Kale and Nana Pawar, on September 4. They were arrested in Malwani village, Malad. Thirty pieces of various auto audio systems was recovered from them.
On further investigation, it came to light that the three belonged to the infamous Phase Pardhi gang, which has 47 cases of dacoity and murder registered against them in Maharashtra. "This gang has been active since 2009. Chauhan himself has been imprisoned for eight months for nine different offences," added Dighavkar.
Maruti is still absconding.
When asked how Chauhan injured his arm, Pratap Dighavkar, Deputy Police Commissioner (Zone 9) said he was informed that he had slipped and hurt it. "However, I shall enquire into the matter," he said.
