The wife died on the operation table and the kids are said to be recuperating. While doctors said the accused, Krishna Kadam's condition is critical, his children, Sai (10) and Atharva (7) are out of danger and have been shifted to a private hospital in Virar.

Kadam, say neighbours, had been out of work for a few months and had taken up the job of vegetable vendor since. His wife Kalpita worked as a nurse at Bhabha Hospital in Bandra.

On Friday night, when the argument surrounding finances, turned violent, Kadam took a kitchen knife and threatened his wife. He struck Sai when she intervened, after which he stabbed Atharva.

A senior official from Virar police station said, "We have registered a case against Kadam, based on his children's statement. He has been booked under IPC Section 323, 324, 307 and 302 (assault, attempt to murder and murder).
