Wake up, CIDCO!

Faced with pending RTI queries, officials put all other requests on hold for three weeks

Property owners and Navi Mumbai residents had a tough time getting requisite documents and completing other society registration matters with the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd (CIDCO) in the last three weeks.

When Kantilal Purohit (name changed), a resident of Ghatkopar, enquired at CIDCO as to the reason behind the delay in issuing him his transfer certificate and No Objection Certificate, he got a surprising answer.

"I was told all officials were busy replying to queries filed under the Right To Information Act," said Purohit.

Officials of the estate department of CIDCO revealed that senior officials had been pulled up for not replying to RTI queries on time.

As a result of this, all officers had been told to only answer pending RTI queries and do nothing else.

"This delay existed only for the last three weeks and we have completed the work of replying to RTI queries. Therefore, this problem will not be there now," said a CIDCO official.

However, CIDCO Vice-chairman and Managing Director S S Gill denied that officials had been given any such order. "There is no question of answering RTI applications leaving other work aside.

RTI applications have to be answered within the mandatory 30 days, so there is no question of any delay," he said.
