Harried car owners in the western suburbs can heave a sigh of relief. The Urban Development Department (UDD) has decided that the suburbs need not wait for the underground parking lots in south Mumbai to get done first.

The BMC had earlier said the western suburbs would get underground parking lots only after the south Mumbai parking lots at Regal Junction and Crawford Market were ready next year and they received feedback. But the traffic congestion at both the places has made the government reconsider the decision. The state is now eager to begin work in the western suburbs as soon as possible.
Officials from UDD, the BMC, the traffic police and other departments will visit those areas that see heavy vehicular traffic to identify parking spots.
A senior official from UDD said, "We have already identified two parking plots in the city at Regal Cinema and Crawford Market. Now we want to identify similar plots in the western and eastern suburbs."
Welcoming the move, M S Kumbhar, senior PI, Bandra traffic division, said, "Handling traffic during peak hours is hell. There is no parking lot at Linking Road. The sooner we get underground parking for the suburbs, the better it will be for us to tackle the traffic jams."u00a0
Added another UDD official, "The government wants to stop parking on the roads as soon as possible. With the number of cars on Mumbai's roads constantly increasing, underground parking lots have become a must."
If all goes according to plan, the underground parking lots in south Mumbai and the western suburbs will be ready at around the same time.
