More than a decade ago, when her son came out to her, Padma Iyer decided to educated herself on homosexuality.

Now, at the Mumbai Marathon in January 2015, she will run to raise Rs 1.5 lakh for The Humsafar Trust, an NGO that works for the LGBTQ community.
This is also the first time that the LGBT community will run the marathon as a community. Sushant Digvikar, Mr India Gay 2014 and a reality show contestant, will also participate in the marathon. "I realise the trauma my child and other children go through living in prejudiced society,” said Iyer.
Pallav Patankar, Director, Programme, The Humsafar Trust, said, “A mother supporting her child’s sexuality is the best form of advocacy for LGBTIQ rights.”
