29-yr-old teacher files FIR against late husband's family, alleges they forced her to give up custody of her kids

A 29-year-old teacher says she has spent the last eight months without having seen her children and is now fighting to get them back. The woman, Dimple Sharma, has now registered a case against her in-laws with the Santacruz police.

Dimple's trauma began on July 22, 2008, the day her husband, 31-year-old Kiran, lost his battle with cancer while being treated in the US. Her in-laws then allegedly began to harass and intimidate her and her father.

According to a letter sent by Dimple to the police last year, her father-in-law began pressurising her to re-marry. After she had endured months of physical, mental and emotional torture at the hands of her in-laws, Dimple alleges they attempted to expel her from the house.

Unable to bear the torture, Dimple returned to her father's house in Malad in 2009 with her kids aged six and five. In her letter, Dimple claims her in-laws then began threatening to kidnap her children if they were not permitted to meet them. She then lodged non-cognisable complaints against her father-in-law Gopal Sharma with Dindoshi police.

In March 2009, her in-laws allegedly forced Dimple to sign consent terms that relinquished her custody over the kids. Under the terms, her in-laws also agreed to provide her with a house to stay with the children. Speaking to MiD DAY, Dimple said, "None of these promises have been kept and I have not seen my children since June 2011."

Last Friday, Dimple finally registered an FIR against her in-laws, identified in the complaint as Sunita Sharma, Gopal Sharma, Rajesh Sharma, Preeti Sharma, Anjali Sharma and Preeti Gopal Sharma. A case has been registered for criminal intimidation, demanding dowry and cheating.

"FIR was registered after a court order. We are investigating the case," said a police officer.

When contacted, Gopal Sharma, Dimple's father-in-law, alleged, "She had come with some goons of an NGO and kidnapped my grandchildren. We had registered an FIR. The police got them back. There are cases pending in both the family court and the metropolitan court. Private detectives have pictures of her in the company of dubious people." Refuting the claims, Dimple said, "I have never shown up with any goons. All the allegations in that FIR are false."
