Reshma Sultan (17), a Std XI student of Gyankendra School; Feroza Khan (15), a Std X student of Versova Welfare School and Zaheer Merchant (17), a Std XII from Bhawan's College, left home at 7 am on February 9 on the pretext of attending tuition classes.
Suicide note
So, the parents filed missing persons' complaint at Oshiwara police station. Soon after, Reshma's parents found a handwritten suicide note in her room. Reshma had written that she was frustrated and was ending her life.
Then, at 8 pm, Feroza's parents received an SMS asking them to check the letterbox. There they found another suicide note on behalf of all the three children.
The police were immediately informed and Senior Inspector Kiran Sonone and his men traced the location of the SMS to Mira Road and Bhayandar.
Sonone suggested that the parents continue sending SMSes to all the three children, so they could keep track of their whereabouts. At 1.20 am on February 10, when Zaheer's parents sent an SMS, it was received at Mapusa in Goa. However, when the police team could reach the hotel in Mapusa, they were told by the hotel owner that the children had gone to Panjim. They were then caught at a hotel in Panjim.u00a0
Excerptsu00a0from the suicide note as revealed by police: Dear mom, We are not complaining. There is no complaint against anybody, whatever we are doing is out of our free will and nobody should be held responsible. We are frustrated and we all (Reshma, Feroza and Zaheer) are committing suicide, you will not find our dead bodies and do not search for us. Do not go to the police, it will be of no use. We are sorry about what we are doing. |
The details of how the police managed to catch them are still unclear.
All the three children are being escorted back to Mumbai and were likely to reach the police station this morning. Sonone said, "We are yet to question the children to get a clear picture.
Our primary objective was to ensure the children are traced and brought home safely."
A preliminary inquiry revealed that Zaheer had Rs 2,000 in cash, while the girls had Rs 1,900 together. The police are upset that staffers at all the three hotels the children went to allowed the minors to check in.
Numerous attempts to contact the parents of the children did not yield any result. Police revealed that the parents were accompanying the children from Goa.
