Antop Hill case: Killer cop in custody, hunt for head begins

The Antop Hill housing society where the chopped body parts were dumped

The Crime Branch has stepped efforts to trace the head of a Solapur chilli trader whose chopped body parts were found in a housing society at Antop Hill. Victim Dada Jagdale, 35, was apparently killed by a police constable who suspected him of having an affair with his wife.

Sources in Crime Branch said the suspected killer, Shiv Shankar Gaikwad, was initially evasive about the spot where he disposed of the head though he now claims to have dumped it in a garbage bin at Mankhurd. Jagdale’s partially burnt, headless body was discovered around 7.30 am the next day in the vicinity of the office of the assistant police commissioner-Sion division. Gaikwad worked as the driver of the ACP. The police have also arrested Gaikwad’s wife Monali in connection with the murder.

“He has been evasive since the beginning, refusing to share any information regarding the murder. After pursuing him for hours, he revealed that he dumped the head in a garbage box at Mankhurd on the intervening night of September 29-30,” said a Crime Branch officer. “The claim was verified by tracking the movement of his car. He indeed travelled to Mankhurd.” Sources said Gaikwad has been pretending to have forgotten the exact spot claiming that it was too dark. They said investigators plan to take him to Mankhurd to trace the head.

Jagdale’s family awaits cremation

Despite nearly two weeks have passed, the Crime Branch has told Jagdale’s family in Solapur to wait for some more time to get his mortal remains. Sources said a DNA match will be done to confirm the identification of the body before handing it over. Also, tracing the head is essential before the handover, said a source, adding that the remains have been kept at the mortuary at Sion hospital.
