After reeling under fund crunch for months and not being able to recover property tax till December last year owing to the pandemic, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finally managed to collect 98 per cent of its target for the financial year 2020-2021. The civic body, which had set a target of collecting Rs 5,200 crore, has managed to recover R5,135 crore — an amount which is much higher than what it collected (Rs 4,161 crore) in 2019-2020.

It is also the BMC’s highest collection in the last 10 years. The maximum that was collected in this period (Rs 5,132 crore) was in the year 2017-2018. While civic officials claimed that it was difficult to collect the due amounts from various stakeholders considering the COVID-19 situation, the timely planning and strict action that was taken over the last three months, helped them make the huge recovery.
