Faced with a deluge of complaints about potholes, over the phone and on Twitter, the BMC has decided to form dedicated teams to fix the craters on the city’s roads. Now, staff from the corporation’s road department and ward officials will work in tandem to address the grievances, said sources.

“We are taking immediate action to fill the potholes on the roads but some potholes are still beyond the reach of the average person. In view of this, joint teams have been appointed by the corporation in all the 24 administrative wards to ensure proper coordination. It will help speed up the process of filling the potholes,” said a civic official.

Despite many complaints, the BMC claims to have filled 33,156 potholes between April 9 and September 11. Officials said the civic body has so far distributed about 2,750 metric tonnes of coldmix made at its Worli asphalt plant to 24 ward offices. Of the potholes filled, 24,030 pits were fixed by workers engaged by the ward offices and the remaining were taken care of by contractors.

Considering that the bitumen in asphalt roads gives away during the monsoon creating the problem of potholes, civic officials said, the corporation will be focussing more on building concrete roads in the future.
