Group of citizens compiles, verifies details of ambulance services for emergencies, shares database with all housing societies

A Community-Driven effort, Project Ambulance, in Mulund has led to the creation of a verified database on ambulances in the area to help patients from all strata, especially amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

“My idea was that every Mulundkar must have the contact details of the nearest ambulance in case of emergency. We decided to collect the data and share it with all societies. We requested them to put up posters on their notice boards, share with their members so that during emergencies, people have easy access to contact details,” said Chetan Bordawekar, social activist and member of Jaagrut Mulundkar, a group of Mulund citizens which worked on Project Ambulance.
Bordawekar, who is also the honorary secretary of Forum for Improving Quality of Life in Mumbai/Suburbs (IQOLMS), said it was teamwork that led to the task’s success.
“We first compiled a database and a list of all possible functional ambulances, in both east and west. Then we called each one of them to verify which service is functional and which has closed down. Then we invited all ambulance owners and drivers for a discussion. We ensured that only credible and well-equipped ambulances that can respond in emergencies and to calls are included in the list. Then we cross-checked and updated the database for Mulund east and west,” Nirmal Thakker, who anchored the project said. “The numbers will be updated as and when more services are added,” he added.
Bordawekar added, “It was important to inform all societies/members/secretaries about this. For this, we divided Mulund into units and shared the database on chat groups and with all buildings in the respective areas. This was done by sparing just one or two hours a day for one week. We are happy that this has worked well.”
