Mumbai saw a significant drop in new cases on Monday but the test positivity rate rose. The TPR was 2.63%, a little higher than Sunday’s TPR which was 2.32%. As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) report, 529 new cases were reported across Mumbai on Monday. However, fewer tests were conducted.


After recording the lowest daily Covid-19 numbers in the second wave on June 3, Mumbai saw a rise in Covid-19 cases earlier last week, though the numbers remained below the 1,000 mark. June 6 was for the first time in the second wave that the TPR dipped below 3.


The city reported the highest number of cases — 11,163 — on April 4 and then the declining trend started. There has been a steady fall in the test positivity rate after May 5 when the TPR was recorded at 10.96 per cent. The doubling rate has continued to significantly improve and is now at 672 days.


There was no change in Covid-19 fatalities as 19 deaths were reported in Mumbai for the second consecutive day. Of the 19 deaths, 16 patients had comorbidities,13 deaths were in the age group of 60 above while 6 deaths were reported in the 40-60 age group. On June 8, the city had reported single digit Covid-19 fatalities for the first time in the second wave.

The city’s recovery rate continues to be at 95 per cent and there were 725 people who recovered and were discharged on Monday. 

Maharashtra saw a significant drop in new cases on Monday as the new cases dipped below 10,000. As per the state report, 8,129 new cases were reported across the state. The state also saw a significant drop in Covid-19 fatalities.  There were 200 deaths reported across the state on Monday. But the state’s case fatality rate has been seeing a steady rise and on Monday was 1.90%. At least 14,732 people recovered and got discharged on Monday. Currently the state has 1.47 lakh active cases.

Like the state, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) also saw a significant drop in new cases and fatalities. The MMR region reported 1,457 cases on Monday, including the ones reported in Mumbai. Apart from Mumbai, Palghar with 167 and Raigad with 256 reported the maximum new cases in MMR region. Thane reported 72 new cases while Kalyan-Dombivili and Navi Mumbai reported 71 new cases each on Monday. MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered 11 Covid-19 fatalities on Monday. While Kalyan has registered 4 deaths, Raigad reported 3 deaths, highest in MMR after Mumbai. Panvel and Navi Mumbai witnessed one death each.
