The BMC will soon be appointing urban designers to beautify the streets on six of the arterial roads in the city. Where the roads department had recently appointed contractors to change the railings on the footpaths in the western suburbs, the urban designers will mainly have to look at fixing street infrastructure and focusing on pedestrian movement.

The six arterial roads they will focus on are the long-winding Link Road and SV Road, along with four roads connecting the eastern suburbs to western suburbs—Andheri Ghatkopar Link Road, Santa Cruz Chembur Link Road, Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road and Ghatkopar Mankhurd Link Road.

Officials in the BMC said that management of traffic on these roads will be mandatory to start the projects. The Mumbai Parking Authority has been asked to simplify parking zones, and a detailed study for this purpose is being conducted. Many of the streets will also be turned into “No parking zones”, revealed civic sources.
