In an effort to reduce the environmental footprint of its 1 billion users, Google Maps on Tuesday announced that it would soon set a default option, which will automatically direct people to the “route with the lowest carbon footprint”. This will primarily happen for the routes that would approximately have the same Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) as the fastest routes.
In cases where the eco-friendly route could significantly increase user’s ETA, Google Maps will let them “compare the relative CO2 impact between the routes” so that they can choose one. However, those who always opt for the fastest route can simply adjust their preferences in the Settings. The eco-friendly routes will be launched in the US later this year, followed by a global expansion.
