In a remarkable display of determination and athleticism, 20 youths from the Maoist-affected Gadchiroli district, along with 5 officers and personnel of the Gadchiroli Police, participated in the prestigious Tata Mumbai Marathon held today, January 21, 2024.

Under the visionary initiative named Project Udaan (Giving Wings to the Youth) by the Gadchiroli Police, these young individuals were given the opportunity to compete in the 42 km and 21 km categories. The district, grappling with Maoist challenges, has witnessed various initiatives aimed at encouraging sports participation among its youth.

In the challenging 42 km category, three talented boys achieved remarkable timings of less than 3 hours, with two securing positions within the top 50 finishers and one in the top 100. The female contender, Priyanka Oksa, demonstrated her prowess by finishing 9th in the half marathon with an impressive timing of 1 hour and 33 minutes.

Project Udaan, conceptualized by Neelotpal, Superintendent of Police, Gadchiroli, and executed under the guidance of Kumar Chintha, Addl. Supdt. of Police (Admin.), aimed at providing a platform for the tribal youth at the state and national level. The selected 25 participants underwent a rigorous two-month residential training program, including practice runs of 21 km, 25 km, 35 km, and 42 km, as well as strength-building exercises.

The marathon saw participation from officers like PI Kundan Gawde, PSI Dhanraj Koli, PSI Shamrang Gawli, PSI Mayur Paval, and several youths, each completing the demanding 42 km run. Notably, Prakash Ramesh Miri and Suraj Sainath Botre secured impressive timings of 2 hours 54 minutes, finishing in the top 50.

In the 21 km category, Priyanka Oksa achieved a commendable 9th position with a timing of 1 hour and 33 minutes. The collective effort and success of these participants stand as a testament to the dedication and guidance provided by the Gadchiroli Police.

The Gadchiroli Police expressed their gratitude to all those who contributed tirelessly to make this endeavor possible, including Neelotpal, Kumar Chintha, Yatish Deshmukh, M. Ramesh, all SDPOs, PSOs, and other personnel involved in the initiative.

“This achievement not only showcases the sporting talent of the Gadchiroli youth but also highlights the transformative impact of initiatives like Project Udaan in uplifting communities facing significant challenges,” said Neelotpal
