Mumbai man says, 'Instead of helping injured man, mob chased driver to beat him'

A 32-year-old ITI engineer, who works as an auto driver, saved the life of youth severely injured in a hit-and-run in Kandivali on Wednesday. The accused, scared of facing an angry crowd, had fled to a nearby building. But, the public caught him and assaulted him. The auto driver, Riyasat Liyakat Ali Shaikh intervened, rescued the driver from the mob and ferried both him and the injured man to hospital.

According to police sources, the accident occurred in the evening when a cement mixer truck ran over Sandeep Manoj Chandaliya, a 27-year-old sweeper. Chandaliya, the sole breadwinner of his family, resides in the Shivshankar building in Laljipada with his 70-year-old grandmother. The youth had gone to meet a friend near Bhoomi Park in Jankalyan Nagar and was walking back home when the accident occurred. Both his legs have been broken and the pelvis area crushed.
