In a remarkable display of swift and efficient response, the Indian Coast Guard successfully averted a potential environmental disaster today when they rescued the research ship RV Sindhu Sadhana of the prestigious National Institute of Oceanography (NIO).

The vessel had suffered engine failure and was drifting perilously close to Karwar, with eight scientists and a total crew of 36 on board.

The distress call was received when the NIO's state-of-the-art research vessel was approximately 20 nautical miles from the ecologically sensitive Karwar coastline, adrift at a speed of 03 knots. The situation was critical, as the ship was carrying valuable scientific equipment and research data, raising concerns of potential damage and loss.

“Upon receiving the distress signal, the Indian Coast Guard launched a high-priority rescue operation with great urgency. Their advanced Ship, manned by a skilled team, was immediately dispatched to the area to prevent any further escalation of the situation.“ the ICG said in a statement.

“Recognizing the potential magnitude of the disaster, the Indian Coast Guard swiftly activated the mission to safeguard both the Ship and the fragile marine ecosystem.” The statement adds

Despite facing challenging weather conditions and the considerable distance from the coastline, the Indian Coast Guard team executed a seamless rescue operation by skillfully taking the NIO's ship under tow and safely bringing it to Goa. Thanks to their efforts, the crew onboard the research vessel is now safe and sound.

The officials have also said that the NIO, relieved by the successful rescue of their research ship, expressed their gratitude to the Indian Coast Guard for their prompt action and life-saving efforts. The potential disaster has been averted, and the scientific mission and precious data onboard the RV Sindhu Sadhana have been preserved.

“The Indian Coast Guard remains committed to ensuring the safety of maritime seafarers in the region and safeguarding the pristine marine ecosystems. Their rapid response and strategic coordination have once again proven their unwavering commitment to protecting both human life and the environment.” The statement reads further.
