While engineering and MBA degrees continue to find favour among many students, pharmacy has become the new addition to the list of coveted fields, in the past few years. However, when compared to last year, a marginal dip in admissions to pharmacy courses has been seen. Admissions to engineering and MBA courses, on the other hand, have increased this year. In contrast to the numbers noticed last year, applications for direct second-year admissions to engineering degrees have also seen an uptick this year.

The Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell, which conducts entrance tests and holds a common admission process for professional courses, has concluded the application process. The data of applications shared by the CET Cell shows new trends in higher education, which have not seen any major shift. While the trends are aligned with what has been seen in the previous years, the rise in number of applicants is indicative of the tough competition that candidates seeking seats in colleges of their choice will have to face. This will also be applicable to those seeking direct second-year admission in engineering courses.

Pitted against the 96,337 applications last year, a total of 1,07,732 students have applied for engineering degree courses this year. For MBA degrees as well, the numbers have soared from 42,814 last year, to 54,227 this year. While there has been an increase in applications to both degree and postgraduate courses in engineering and MBA, applications to pharmacy courses have dipped from 65,279 in the last academic year to 58,349 this year. As far as admissions to direct second-year engineering degrees is concerned, the numbers have risen from 62,489 to 69,448 this year. Architecture courses have had fewer takers.

A CET Cell official, while requesting anonymity, shared, “The number of candidates seeking admission for varied professional courses has increased this year, which shows that getting a seat in the college of their choice will be tougher for candidates.”
