Pune car crash: Govt panel to probe JJB members conduct over bail to minor accused

The Maharashtra government has formed a committee to investigate the conduct of Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) members and determine whether rules were followed when giving orders in the Pune car case, an official said on Wednesday. The government move came after the public became indignant over the case and initial bail granted to the minor accused and its conditions. It asked him to write a 300-word essay on road accidents, an order that drew an onslaught of criticism.

The State Department of Women and Child Development (WCD) constituted the five-member committee last week. A deputy commissioner-rank officer leads it from the department and is due to present its report next week, an official said.

Two IT professionals in their twenties were killed when their motorbike was hit by a speeding Porsche driven allegedly by a 17-year-old boy in Pune's Kalyani Nagar area early on May 19. According to police, the teenager was intoxicated at the time of Pune car crash.

A PTI report quoted WCD commissioner Prashant Narnavare saying, "We have formed a committee to probe the overall conduct of the JJB members appointed by the state government, to check whether norms were followed while issuing orders in the Pune car crash case. I have powers under the Juvenile Justice Act to probe the overall conduct of the members who have been appointed by the state government. We have set up a committee to assess the overall conduct of the JJB members in connection with the order that granted bail to the juvenile after the accident."
