State and BMC warning

The state and the BMC have issued advisories after a new variant of COVID-19 was detected in Maharashtra. The health department of the state stated that there is 17.7 per cent increase in new cases in this week, compared to last week. This rise is noticed in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad. The BMC also issued advisory on Tuesday for the festive season.

The Maharashtra state government has reported new sub-variants of Omicron – BQ.1 (US variant), BA.2.3.20 apart from XBB, which is a recombinant of BA.2.75 and BJ.1. These new variants have a growth advantage over other variants of Omicron like BA.2.75 and immune evasive properties.

The advisory by the BMC mentions avoiding close contact with symptomatic patients. Frequent hand washing, use of handkerchief/tissue paper to cover nose and mouth while sneezing and coughing, and that wearing masks in crowded places will help prevent spread of infection.
