A man was injured after he fell off a building and landed on iron rods at a construction site in Maharashtra's Thane city in the early hours of Monday, a civic official said, reported the PTI.

The accident occurred around 4.12 am at the site of a 26-storey under-construction building at Bhim Nagar in the Vartak Nagar area of Thane district, he said.

According to the PTI, Jairaj Sardar, a resident of Bhim Nagar, fell off a building and landed on the protruding iron rods at the construction site, he said.

A rod pierced the man's waist, and workers at the construction site used a grinder machine to cut the rod on either side to extricate him safely, the official said.

On receiving an alert, local firefighters and a disaster management team rushed to the scene, said Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Disaster Management Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation.

The injured man is undergoing treatment at Kalwa Civic Hospital, he said.

Officials clarified that the injured man was not working at the construction site.

Meanwhile, in an another incident on January 1, five persons sustained serious injuries in a collision between a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a truck on the Nashik-Mumbai highway in Thane district, Maharashtra, as reported by civic officials, stated a report in PTI.

According to Yasin Tadvi, the chief of Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMC) Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC), the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. in the Panch Pakhadi area when an SUV transporting railway cables from Vasai in Palghar district to Thane station encountered a tyre puncture and collided with a truck transporting nine tonnes of bricks from the Bhiwandi area to Mankhurd in Mumbai, the report added.

The report further quoted Yasin Tadvi stating that firefighters conducted a rescue operation to liberate the SUV driver who was stuck inside the vehicle.

The driver and four other occupants of the SUV were seriously injured and were sent to Thane Civil Hospital. Two of them were later evacuated to hospitals in Mumbai in critical condition, according to the official, the report added.
