On Day 4 of Maharashtra Assembly Monsoon Session 2025 on Thursday, legislators raised concerns over the slow pace of construction of a 1,200-bed Super Speciality Hospital building at Mumbai’s Sir JJ Hospital.

A group of legislators — Murji Patel (Andheri East), Prakash Surve (Magathane), Chandrakant Nimbaji Patil (Muktainagar), Chandradeep Narke (Barshi), Dr. Babasaheb Deshmukh (Sangole), Mohan Mate (Nagpur South), Amol Patil (Erandol), and Atul Bhatkhalkar (Dombivli East) — sought clarification from Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif regarding significant delays in the project, which was launched in 2019.

The legislators pointed out that despite the growing number of patients at Sir JJ Hospital, construction work on the Super Speciality Hospital has progressed slowly. They claimed that not even one wing of the new facility has been completed, causing hardship to patients. The Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) also raised questions over the delay owing to challenges such as the discovery of large boulders during excavation and the Covid-19 pandemic, for which the contractor was granted a one-year extension. The project cost, they alleged, had escalated from Rs 407.16 crore in 2020 to Rs 778.75 crore, yet no concrete action appeared to have been taken to expedite completion.
