Dadar police on Tuesday invoked Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, (MCOCA) against gangster Ashwin Naik and eight others for extorting Rs 50 lakh from a builder.
All three accused in the case were also presented before special MCOC court where they were remanded to police custody till January 2.
"The accused were produced in the court and were remanded in further police custody till January 2," said Special Public Prosecutor Dileep Shah, adding that MCOCA was invoked against them.
A total of eight people have been arrested in the case. On December 20, police arrested Naik and others on Bhawani Shankar Road in Dadar area when they allegedly came to collect extortion money of Rs 50 lakh from a local builder.
Naik, who was left crippled by a paralytic attack in prison, was acquitted in all 16 cases against him and released from Yerwada jail in May 2009. At the time, he had said he would no longer lead a life of crime. However, on December 20, he was caught red-handed by the police as he collected Rs 50 lakh from a Dadar builder he had earlier kidnapped and threatened.
According to the police, Naik's aides had abducted the builder on December 9 at gun-point and took him to the gangster's office in Subhash Nagar area. Naik threatened the builder with dire consequences if he didn't pay Rs 50 lakh in cash and a 6000 sq ft premises in his upcoming project.
During investigations, the police learnt that the accused had similarly extorted Rs 25 lakh from the builder&rsquo;s business partner a few days ago. After complaining to the police, the builder fixed a date and spot to meet the culprits to hand over the money.&nbsp;
On December 18, the builder approached Dadar police, after which a trap was laid and Naik and others were nabbed.
