A letter has been issued by the state government to every police station to dissolve all existing mohalla committees in their area, and reconstitute the mohalla after checking the credentials of persons who wish to be members of the committee.

The first mohalla committee, which was formed in Bhiwandi after the 1984 riots, helped the police maintain law and order.

After the 1992-93 riots, such committees were formed in the jurisdiction of every police station. Off late, the committees, which were to comprise of influential citizens in the area under a police station, and expected to mediate when there was a communal conflagration, had been hijacked by gangsters and police informers.
