Mumbai: Alert ticket checkers help ailing commuter get to hospital

The commuter

Two ticket checkers onboard a local train on Saturday helped rush an ill woman commuter who was in pain to the hospital in time. The 19-year-old passenger was writhing in agony before the ticket checkers, who were on duty in the same compartment, swung into action.

“As Chief Ticket Inspector Deepa Vaidya and Head Ticket Checker Jain Marcella took charge of the situation, they consoled the commuter and as the next approaching station was Thane, they got in touch with the stationmaster and alerted him. The latter kept a wheelchair on standby as the train reached Thane.

“On reaching the station, they took the woman to the emergency clinic on platform 2 but as the lady was critical, she was rushed to Thane Civil Hospital with the help of the Government Railway Police (GRP) and another co-passenger who also helped the ticket checkers, seeing that they were doing their best for the passenger,” an official said.

A Central Railway spokesperson said, “As the passenger had a medical history, she was admitted to the ICU and her parents were informed about the situation. Her mother reached the hospital and thanked both the ticket checkers and the railway administration for their quick action. Later in the evening, her mother called up Jain Marcella to express her gratitude and inform her that the patient was doing well and would be undergoing surgery soon.”
