BMC collects over Rs 78 crore in fine from people not wearing masks in public

Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has collected Rs 78 crore in fines from people who were found without masks in public places from April 8, 2020 to November 24, 2021. 


According to a report published in the Indian Express, the BMC collected Rs 78.55 crore from 39 lakh citizens in one year. The civic body had made masks mandatory in public areas last year in Mumbai to contain the spread of coronavirus. Mumbai was one of the worst effected cities in the country with maximum Covid-19 cases.


As per the rules, a fine of Rs 200 is levied if citizens are caught without wearing masks in public places. The BMC has deployed over 1,200 marshals across 24 municipal wards to monitor violation of Covid-19 norms, the report added.

The civic body data revealed that most people without masks were caught in the K-West ward leading to collection of Rs 6.17 crore in fines.  

On Friday, Mumbai reported 230 new Covid-19 cases, taking the total tally to 7,62,185. Around 248 Covid-19 patients recovered and were discharged on Friday, taking the recovery count to 7,40,957. Now, there are 2343 active cases in the city.
