Mumbai: BMC razes 45 constructions along JVLR for Metro Line 6

Encroachments are reduced to dust by the civic body in Jogeshwari West on Monday

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday demolished 45 constructions along the Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) to clear the way for the Mumbai Metro Pink Line 6.

Officials claimed their actions would not only speed up Metro project work but also help to reduce traffic congestion in the area and pave the way for the construction of a 36.60-metre-wide road that was to be built under the Development Plan.

With the help of the Oshiwara police, the civic body took long-pending action against encroachers near Veera Desai Road and 90 Feet Road in Jogeshwari West.

A civic official said that the demolition had been delayed due to court cases as well as the involvement of several authorities. “Due to the issue, Metro work was halted. Also, there are massive traffic jams in the area due to the incomplete construction of the DP road. The area also faces major problems as a rainwater drain is missing some links,” he said.

Another civic official claimed that the evictions will help reduce waterlogging. The drain reconstruction work will be carried out by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). A 36.60-metre-wide street, from Infinity Mall to Veera Desai, is being widened.  Once this route is ready, it will drastically improve east-west connectivity from SV Road to Lokhandwala and nearby areas.

The 14.10-km-long Metro 6 route is parallel to the Jogeshwari Vikhroli junction (between Swami Samarth Nagar and Vikhroli). A 120-foot, one-km road between Link Road and SV Road is also being developed by the MMRDA.
