The bus stops will also have good seating arrangements

Bus stops in the city and suburbs are in for a swanky makeover with around 105 existing pole bus stops soon to be replaced with new ones with seating arrangements. The first such bus stop has been installed at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Chowk near the museum at Fort.

BEST General Manager Lokesh Chandra confirmed the development and said the new bus stops will come from the district planning and development committee fund of Guardian Minister Aaditya Thackeray.

“These are see-through bus shelters with seating arrangements that you’ll soon see across the city. We are keen on elevating the aesthetics and functionality of the city while keeping its unique identity intact,” Thackeray said.

A BEST official said there are around 6,000 bus stops across the city, including about 1,000 pole bus stops. The plan is to replace half of the pole bus stops and even regular ones with the new ones.

Meanwhile, BEST has also rationalised its route network with effect from September 1, 2021 to improve services. New corridor routes have been introduced to enable Mumbaikars to travel on buses at better frequency at less than 15 minutes on most routes and improved connectivity. In the process, many bus stops have been realigned as per changing Covid-19 travel patterns, upcoming Metro stations, among others. Local feeder routes, too, have been strengthened.
