He was called Mr Perfect in his gang, for having meticulously planned and successfully committed 51 robberies and house break-ins across the city. A lone CCTV camera in a Kurar neighbourhood where the 30-year-old accused and his accomplices had struck finally led to their undoing.
Last week, the Kurar police arrested Harun Sardar and two of his accomplices - Arfan Mulla, 38, and Mahesh Gupta alias Matru, 28, all residents of Malwani. Sardar was arrested from his girlfriend's house in the same area.

Modus operandi Explaining his way of functioning, the police said the accused had a unique style - he would do a recce of the spot, mark the houses he wanted to target, and then, plan his entry and exit routes. Officers added that he wouldn't be satisfied with just one house a night and, at times, would break into three in the same night.

Assistant inspector from Kurar police station G Gharge said, "On August 8, he broke into three houses in Tanaji Nagar, Kurar. Luckily for us, he got captured on a CCTV in the area while fleeing with his three accomplices. After that, we found out their places of residence, laid a trap and caught Sardar and two others from Malwani."

Sardar has three cases against him at the Malwani police station, eight at Kurar and 16 at Kandivli among many others in other police stations.
In the trap Gharge said, "When I was posted in Borivli, I had caught him in a house break-in case. So, I knew his modus operandi. When the three cases on August 8 were reported at Kurar police station, my suspicion immediately went to Sardar. And when I saw him in the CCTV footage, I knew for certain that it was him. I knew he was a resident of Malwani. So, with the help of Malwani police, we laid a trap. However, he came to know about it and fled."

The Malwani police managed to nab his accomplices then. Later, on August 10, Sardar was caught. Speaking to mid-day senior inspector Uday Raj Shirke said, "The accused is a habitual offender. We are investigating all cases registered against him."
