A 45-year-old man was arrested by <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/mumbai-police-conducts-overnight-all-out-operation-in-city-arrests-eight-wanted-accused-23347486" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Mumbai Police</a> on Saturday after he allegedly killed his wife by slitting her throat on suspicion of her character in Malvani area, an official said, reported news agency PTI.
Mumbai crime: Incident occurred in Shankarwadi locality
The incident occurred in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/maharashtra-woman-held-for-threatening-man-extorting-money-in-thane-23347481" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Shankarwadi locality</a> this afternoon during an argument between the couple.
"The accused, identified as Shrawan Rawat, and his wife Sapna (35) had been fighting among themselves over family issues. The matter escalated on Saturday afternoon when Rawat allegedly slit Sapna's throat with a knife outside their house and fled," the official told PTI.
After the incident, local people assembled at the spot and rushed Sapna to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead before admission, he said.
Mumbai crime: Accused arrested
Rawat was arrested after an intense search operation from <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/maharashtra-four-killed-after-milk-tanker-hits-tempo-and-plunges-into-river-in-thane-23347480" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Malvani area</a> and was booked on the charge of murder under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), he said, reported PTI.
The couple is married with three children.
Police are conducting <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/man-held-from-dehradun-for-sharing-intimate-pictures-of-thane-girl-on-internet-23347450" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">further investigation</a>, the official added.
Mumbai crime: Other incidents
In another case, a sarpanch was booked in Palghar in Maharashtra for allegedly raping and cheating a 27-year-old nurse, a police official said on Saturday, reported PTI.
Kamlakar Dhoom, sarpanch of Dengyachi Met of Jawhar, is accused of befriending the nurse, forcing her to divorce her husband and raping her repeatedly, senior inspector Sanjay Bramhane of Jawhar police station said, reported PTI.
"He also took Rs 1 lakh from the victim on the promise of making her services permanent at the health facility. She attempted suicide and is presently hospitalised. The FIR was registered on Friday and efforts are on to nab him," the official said, reported PTI.
Meanwhile, a 27-year-old woman was arrested from Bhayander in Maharashtra's Thane district for allegedly cheating and extorting money from a man by threatening to frame him in false cases, police said on Saturday, reported PTI.
Based on a complaint, the police on Thursday arrested Sandhya Gajanan Adate under sections 384 (extortion), 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace ) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, deputy commissioner zone-I Bhayander Prakash Gaikwad said, reported PTI.
The accused allegedly targeted a 36-year-old shopkeeper whom she got acquainted with in 2021. The victim is a married man from a minority community, and Adate insisted that he marry her, he said, reported PTI.
Adate underwent a religious conversion to marry him and when he refused to register the marriage as his divorce matter was not settled, she started blackmailing him and threatened to register false cases against him, the official said, reported PTI.
The accused initially demanded Rs 30 lakh from the man, and he paid her Rs 5 lakh, he said.
The victim approached the police with a complaint on May 1, the official said, adding that a probe is on to find out if the woman was a habitual offender involved in such cases in the past.
