Work on the Parel TT bridge and Sion rail overbridge will begin soon. The traffic police are likely to take a final decision this week on pulling down both bridges for redevelopment. The Sion bridge is to be reconstructed for the 5th and 6th railway lines.

“These bridges in south central Mumbai are crucial for traffic. So we need to understand the traffic situation before allowing both to be pulled down.  We had granted a no-objection certificate (NOC) for the Parel TT bridge in June. But we need to understand the current traffic scenario,” said an official of the traffic police.

“We will decide on both bridges this week. We will discuss the traffic scenario and then take a final decision,” said Pravin Padwal, joint commissioner of police, traffic.

“We are looking for an NOC from the traffic division. Hopefully, we will get permission to stop vehicles from plying on both bridges this week,” said a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official.

Central Railway (CR) decided to pull down the 110-year-old Sion railway crossing bridge to make way for the 5th and 6th railway lines.  Currently, the bridge over the railway line is around 40 metres long. It will be increased to 51 metres.

According to reports, the bridge includes two spans and one of its pillars is on the railway line. The new bridge will be on a single span and won’t have a pillar on the railway line. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 50 crore. The width of the bridge will not be increased but the height will be increased from 5.1 metres to 5.4 metres.

According to the BMC official, the civic authority will build an approach road and the Railways will construct parts of the bridge over the railway line. Construction will take two years. The redevelopment of Parel TT bridge on Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road will take six months. It will cost around Rs 17 crore.
