A bandage for the art world Out of sight, out of mind. This phrase, unfortunately, rings true in the art world too. One such case was eminent 80-year-old artist Vasant Wankhede, who succeeded to on Sunday, due to kidney failure.

&ldquo;He was a marvellous painter but sadly, he was not as recognised as his contemporaries,&rdquo; rues leading abstract artist Prabhakar Kolte, who has shown many slideshows of Wankhede&rsquo;s work to his students at Sir JJ School of Art; the institute also happened to be the alma mater of the late artist.

In a career spanning four decades (1965 onwards), Wankhede&rsquo;s oeuvre comprised black-and-white water-colour works, canvas paintings, collages as well as abstract art using media like bandage and cloth. This became his trademark style.
&ldquo;He would say that these media reflected his ideas,&rdquo; shares Kolte about the artist&rsquo;s minimalist work that has been showcased in galleries across India and in Muscat. &ldquo;However, he was never interested in promoting himself or even socialising. He was shy and modest, someone who concentrated only on his work,&rdquo; he recalls.
