In a move aimed at expediting the construction of Metro corridors and mitigating potential delays, Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, metropolitan commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), has introduced a novel strategy by creating a dedicated team of experts for each Metro line. It is anticipated that this innovative approach will revolutionise the construction process, ensuring seamless coordination and timely execution.

With the current under-construction Metro corridors in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) witnessing rapid progress, this new strategy comes as a decisive step towards achieving punctuality and precision. Dr Mukherjee shared insights into the transformational move, stating, “Previously, various aspects such as electrical and civil work lacked clear ownership, leading to potential bottlenecks. With this new approach, we’ve appointed a team leader for each Metro line, alongside directors to oversee the comprehensive progress. This change will usher in a significant paradigm shift.”

The restructured approach involves the assignment of three directors, each overseeing a dedicated metro line. This strategic distribution of responsibilities aims to bring unparalleled focus and accountability to the construction process. Administrative guidelines have been meticulously defined to outline the responsibilities of directors, chief engineers, and team leaders. This framework is expected to foster better synchronisation between departments, enhancing coordination between systems and civil engineering.

In addition to the division of teams, the MMRDA is also revolutionising the procurement process by implementing bulk rates for items and parts. This streamlined approach to procurement will eliminate disputes and finger-pointing among contractors, ensuring a smoother workflow. Each stage of the construction process will incorporate interfaces to expedite progress further.

Among the prominent metro corridors currently under construction in MMR are the DN Nagar to Madale Metro Line 2B, Wadala-Kasarvadavli (Thane) Metro Line 4, Metro Line 5 connecting Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan, Metro Line 6 spanning from Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli (EEH), and the extension of Line 7, known as metro Line 9, which connects Andheri to CSIA and Dahisar to Mira-Bhayander. Officials from MMRDA affirmed that construction work is proceeding at an accelerated pace, with Dr Mukherjee undertaking regular reviews.
