In the meet addressed by Commissioner of Police Hemant Nagrale, some interesting data  on crime during the lockdown and restrictions was shown. According to Mumbai police, the data of the past three years - 2019 to 2021 - revealed that sexual offenders were known to the victims. The offenders include guardians, relatives, social media friends who lured them with the promise of marriage, live-in partners, separated husbands, neighbours, co-workers, servants, gardeners, driver, etc. Social media friends top the list as offenders in 1,507 rape cases including 856 lodged under POCSO Act in past three years. “Social media friends were found more involved in rape and POCSO cases. Most victims were minors or teenagers and were soft targets for the offenders who lured them with a promise of marriage,” said Nagrale.

“Parents have to be very careful about what their kids are doing on social media. They must be alert to behavioural changes. These are major steps that can be taken to prevent such crimes against girls and minors,” said Milind Bharambe, joint commissioner of police, crime. The data also revealed that around 2,669 cases of rape have been reported in the past three years including 888 in 2021. Servants, drivers and gardeners were second on the list of offenders in rape and POCSO cases. At least 386 offenders were gardeners, drivers and servants of the victims. Neighbours ranked third on the list and 316 were found involved in  cases of rape including 218 cases of POCSO. Besides these, 170 family members and relatives and 65 live-in partners were involved in cases of rape and POCSO. The data also revealed that fathers, brothers and sons were also found arrested in 48 cases of rape of which 38 were under POCSO.
