Youngsters who wrote their Std XII CBSE and ICSE board exams are a worried lot, as lakhs of students have already applied for undergraduate courses at the Mumbai University whereas they still await their results.

The Mumbai University (MU), which opened the pre-admission process for undergraduate (UG) courses on June 9, has received the registration for 2,09,297 students so far. The number of applications it received stands at 5,41,622, as every student is allowed to apply for more than one course. The MU has 3,95,214 seats for UG courses.

It has also released the schedule for admission and the dates for merit list announcements. Students can submit the online application and go ahead with registration only when they have access to their Std XII scores/marksheets. This leaves students from other boards, including the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), worried.

The CBSE Std XII board exam was over on June 15. "The first merit list will be announced on June 29, as per the schedule, whereas we have no clue on when the CBSE result will be announced. My son wants to apply for a state board junior college,” said Neeru Singh, parent of a Std XII student.

An official from the MU, however, asked students not to worry. "We have issued the admission schedule, and any changes in the same will be notified. Students whose results are awaited need not panic. They will be accommodated before the lists are announced. I am sure their boards will announce the results soon," the official added.

Meanwhile, entrance exams for most undergraduate professional courses are likely to be held in the mid-week of August. The entrance exams will also be conducted through a common entrance test (CET).

Last year, 57 colleges requested that MU expand the number of seats. Following the withdrawal of two colleges, MU opted to raise seats in 55 of its colleges, allowing more students to enrol in the current academic year. In addition, the university plans to add 70 more colleges in the next few years.
