Mumbai: Where is the evidence that SSR was murdered, ask forensic experts

Sushant Singh Rajput

The death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput is back in the news, with an employee of the hospital where his post-mortem took place alleging that the star had been killed and did not die by suicide. However, many forensic experts expressed ire at conspiracy theorists, stating that if the staff is so knowledgeable, of what use is a doctor and their degree? Over two years after Rajput’s death, a Cooper hospital mortuary room employee Roopkumar Shah alleged that there were several marks on the actor’s body and neck.

He claimed that after Rajput passed away, the hospital received five to six dead bodies for post-mortem. “One of them was a VIP’s body... There were several marks on his body and two to three marks on his neck as well. The post-mortem needed to be recorded but the higher authorities were asked to only click pictures of the body because we had to hand over the body. Hence, we followed the directions. Usually, we discuss every case with a doctor before beginning the procedure. I told the doctor that it seemed to be murder but the doctor told us to take pictures and conduct the PM in emergency and I followed the instruction,” Shah stated.

In the wake of the allegation, mid-day spoke to a few forensic experts to weigh in on the matter. A senior expert, who did not wish to be named, said, “After two years he is saying that it seems to be a case of murder. Where was he? Why didn’t he tell this earlier? First of all, he is not an expert. Without the dissection of the body, even a forensic doctor can’t say whether or not there was an internal injury. I don’t think it will be scientifically provable. The person has to provide some evidence to prove whatever he is saying is true. He should have mentioned this before to the investigating agencies. If they have any photographs or video recordings, the investigating agency can verify the matter with the other experts.”

Another senior forensic expert said, “It can be a clue but it cannot be proof. Whatever the person is claiming should be evaluated by other experts to determine whether what the person is saying makes sense or not.” Yet another expert said, “If a morgue attendant can identify murder or suicide, what is the use of a doctor and their degree? Showing doctors in a bad light is incorrect and such things need to be stopped.” Rajput, who starred in hit films such as M S Dhoni: The Untold Story, Kedarnath and Chhichhore, was found dead at his Bandra home on June 14, 2020, aged 34.
