The upward trend of daily COVID-19 infections continued, with the city registering a sharp spike on Sunday with 645 positive cases. A total of 16,340 people were tested for novel Coronavirus.

The number of tests being conducted in the city is almost the same for the past five days, but the number of positive cases has been constantly surging. The test positivity rate (TPR)rose to 4 per cent on Sunday, equal to that of December, and way higher than last week’s figure. Till February 9, the city was seeing an average of 400 cases daily, but the numbers went past 500 from the very next day.
Even the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and the state witnessed a growth in new cases. The state recorded 4,092 confirmed cases and the MMR 1,014, including the city’s figure. Figures surged in Amravati (430), Nagpur (437) and Pune (353) as well. Kalyan-Dombivli recorded 118 new cases, Thane 90, Navi Mumbai 93. The cities reported no death.
The daily death toll was 40 , including four in the city. Of the four deceased confirmed in Mumbai, three patients had comorbidities, and all four of them were above the age of 60 years.
Only 1,355 discharged in state
Across the state 1,355 patients were discharged on Sunday, including 309 in the city. The state now has over 36,000 active cases, including 5,068 in Mumbai. The doubling rate of cases in the city worsened to 479 days, after reaching 565 on Monday. The recovery rate in the state has decreased slightly to 95.7 per cent.
On Sunday, barring Aurangabad circle, every other region reported new deaths. Nine deaths (all are from the period before last week) were reported in Raigad, six each in Nagpur and Pune circle, five each in Nashik and Akola.
