Woman scammed out of Rs 28 lakh in fake Gold deal

In another incident, Navi Mumbai police have arrested two men for dacoity after a woman lost nearly Rs 28 lakh in a scam involving the promise of gold at a cheap rate, an official reported on Friday.

The 36-year-old woman from Nerul filed a complaint stating that one of the arrested men contacted her, offering to sell her half a kilo of gold for Rs 27.81 lakh, below the market price. On May 18, the man took her to Sanpada station in a car for the deal. Once there, a group of people threatened the woman and snatched her bag containing the money. The man and an accomplice who was in the car fled the scene, she alleged, the PTI report stated.

According to the report, following various leads, police arrested Rakesh Shivaji Shingte (39), who had contacted the woman, and Roopesh Subash Sapkale (42), both residents of Thane. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the others involved, the official added.

Meanwhile, the Pune police have written to the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) seeking permission to investigate the youngster allegedly involved in the Pune car crash incident that killed two IT professionals, amid a new twist involving blood tests. According to police, the 17-year-old was driving the expensive car intoxicated when the fatal collision occurred on May 19 in the city's Kalyani Nagar region. He is in an observation home until June 5.
