Crime Branch also initiates process to proclaim Parambir Singh as “wanted”

A holiday court on Saturday remanded API Sachin Waze to two more days of police custody in an extortion case. Waze’s lawyer did not oppose the police’s plea of seeking extension of Waze’s custody. His lawyer also informed the court that as there is much pressure on Waze from the Centre and the state, he is contemplating giving his statement before the magistrate under Sections 164 CrPC. The court asked Waze’s lawyer to let him think about it and make the application before the regular court.

Waze is in the custody of the Crime Branch under an FIR registered by the Goregaon police on charges of extortion against former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh, Riyaz Bhati and others in August. The case was registered on the basis of a complaint by businessman Vimal Agarwal, in which it was alleged that the accused extorted Rs 11.92 lakh from him. Waze was arrested on November 1.
The Mumbai Crime Branch, which is probing the matter, produced Waze in court and sought extension of his remand. Shekhar Jagtap, Special Public Prosecutor (SPP), told mid-day, “We have to inquire about the trail of money taken in extortion from the complainant and for this, we need two more days of custody. The court has accepted this.”
Jagtap on Saturday also said that the Crime Branch on Monday would file an application before a regular court seeking initiation of procedure to get the “proclaimed accused” former Mumbai Police commissioner Parambir Singh declared as a “wanted accused” under Section 82 of CrPC by the court, as he has failed to appear before the court.
Three non-bailable warrants have already been issued against Singh by various courts in Mumbai and Thane. A total of five FIRs are registered against Singh. A look-out circular (LoC) is also already in force against Singh. In addition, two open inquiries have been launched by the state’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) against Singh over corruption charges levelled against him by two serving police inspectors.
