In a significant ruling, the Bombay High Court has asserted that the reach of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act extends beyond an individual's state of origin. The court emphasized that limiting the Act's jurisdiction based on an individual's state recognition would defeat its intended purpose.

A full bench comprising Justices Revati Mohite Dere, Bharati Dangre, and N J Jamadar, in their judgment, underlined that the Act was enacted to prevent atrocities against Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. Its primary objective is to eradicate the humiliation and harassment these communities have historically faced, while safeguarding their fundamental, socio-economic, and political rights.
