After an increase in the vaccination numbers on Tuesday, the city saw a dip once again on Wednesday as many private centres ran out of stock. According to the BMC, previously 45 private hospitals were administering shots, but now the number has come down to 37. This in turn brought down the number of inoculations from 70,000 to 50,000. However, private hospitals have managed to procure Sputnik V and 667 beneficiaries received its first dose on Wednesday.

After three days of allowing walk-ins at various centres, the civic centres will now vaccinate people through scheduled appointments.
Speaking about administering the Sputnik V vaccine, Dr Bhaskar Shah, cardiologist and owner of Aashirwad Hospital, said, “Employees of Ashok Silk Mills were given the Sputnik V jab today. We had procured the vaccine and our team of doctors and paramedical staff were there at their premises in Ghatkopar West to administer the doses.”
Fewer students take the jab
On Wednesday, 50,807 beneficiaries were inoculated at several civic, government and private centres — and as per data released by the BMC, over 38,635 inoculations were done in private centres. The special drive organised for students saw a tremendous response last week but this week the numbers dropped and merely 150 students on an average got inoculated at the three centres assigned for it.
A civic official said, “There could be many reasons for this, and one of which is that no assurance is being given of the second dose, for which many students are not coming forward. We have enough doses but the response has been lukewarm this week. Also, we have decided to give preference to Mumbai students, which might be another reason why the numbers have dropped.”
