The arrested duo claim they stole the bag and abandoned it on seeing its contents

The Kalyan Government Railway Police’s (GRP) investigation into the bag full of detonators found near the Kalyan railway station have led to a twist in the tale. The police have arrested two history sheeters who claim that they had stolen the bag from someone else, and fled on seeing its contents. The plastic bag containing 54 explosive detonators was found outside the station at around 11.30 am on Thursday. The GRP subsequently registered a case and initiated investigations into the matter.

According to GRP officials, the arrested accused have identified as Joy David Kalawa alias Naidu, 23, a resident of Badlapur, and Rishikesh Devidas Nikumbh, 25, a resident of Bhiwandi. The police said that Kalawa has four past cases against him registered with the Dharavi police station, while Nikumbh has two cases with the Thane police.
“After the case was registered, we conducted technical investigations that helped us identify the accused. After they were arrested, they said in their interrogation that they had stolen the bag from someone else, and abandoned it and fled when they saw what was inside. The actual owner of the bag and the purpose behind their use are still being investigated,” said Senior Police Inspector Pandari Kande, Kalyan GRP.
Another officer said that the duo reached Kalyan late on Wednesday night by the Chennai Express, and saw a person sleeping on the skywalk next to the bag. The police are now conducting further inquiries to identify this person, so that he can be questioned as to why he was carrying such a large quantity of detonators. Usually, electronic detonators are used at construction site and mines but have also been known to be used in illegal activities.
