Thane: Shiv Sena functionary beaten up; police register case

Thane: Shiv Sena functionary beaten up; police register case

A group of persons allegedly beat up a local Shiv Sena functionary in Maharashtra's Thane district, police told news agency PTI on Tuesday.


The incident took place on Sunday following which a case was registered against 20 persons, an official from Ambernath police station told PTI.


Ajit Surendran Nair (39), the Shiv Sena's (Eknath Shinde group) shakha pramukh of a branch at Navre Park in Ambernath, in his police complaint said an election was in progress in a housing society in the area on Sunday, the official told PTI.


At that time, the accused persons arrived there and tried to pull the chairs meant for the society members. When Nair objected, they allegedly beat him up and also threatened him with dire consequences, the official said quoting the complaint, reported PTI.

The victim, who suffered injuries, later went to the Ambernath police station where the security personnel referred him to a hospital for medical treatment, reported PTI.

The complainant also stated he fears for his life from the accused persons, as per the First Information Report (FIR), reported PTI.

Based on the complaint, the police registered the FIR against 20 persons, of whom five have been identified, under relevant Indian Penal Code sections for unlawful assembly, rioting, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation, the official told PTI.

Meanwhile, Police have registered offences against 11 persons for allegedly gambling at a hotel in Navi Mumbai and seized more than Rs 1.75 lakh from them, an official told PTI on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off, local police on Sunday conducted raid at a room in the hotel located in Turbhe area of Navi Mumbai.

The police found seven persons playing 'teen-patti', a gambling game involving cards, and three others serving them tea, coffee, etc, the official from Turbhe police station told PTI.

The police seized Rs 1,05,230 from the gamblers and Rs 70,000 cash lying on the gambling table, he said.

An FIR was registered against the seven gamblers, three persons who were serving them beverages and the hotel manager under provisions of the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act, the official told PTI.
