A medical student of BMC-run T N Medical College & BYL Nair Charitable Hospital hanged herself to death at her residence in Agripada on Wednesday, police said.
She is the second student from city-based medical institution to die by suicide in the past one month.

Shreyasa Pathkar, a final year medical student of the Department of Occupational Therapy, took her life when her family members were not at home.

A senior officer of Agripada police station said she lived with her parents and a younger brother. On September 21, when no one was at home, she hanged herself, he added.

“However, we did not find any suicide note from the spot. Even the family members have not expressed any suspicion. We are investigating the matter and trying to find out the reason behind such a drastic step,” the officer said.

Dr Praveen Rathi, dean of Nair hospital, told mid-day, “We are in shock. She never complained or expressed any of her concerns to her friends or teachers at the institution. It’s a huge loss for us. She was a bright student.”

Earlier, a third-year MBBS student, Govind Mane, of Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College and KEM hospital died by suicide at his home in Sangli. The institution had appointed counsellors for fellow students. Besides, a friendship initiative was also started wherein professors and seniors guided the students.
