While onion prices are inching closer to Rs 100 per kg with each passing day, traders at the wholesale APMC market in Vashi are expecting a fall in prices by Rs 5 to Rs 10 per kg once the onions imported from Egypt arrive at the market.

Ashok Walunj, director of onion-potato market, APMC, said, &ldquo;We are expecting a fresh consignment of onions from Egypt in a few days. It will arrive at the APMC market after getting clearance at JNPT. Prices are expected to come down by a few rupees, depending on the quantity of onions reaching the market.

&ldquo;We are expecting 15 to 20 tonnes of imported onions in a few days.&rdquo; Yesterday, the APMC market received 130 trucks of onions as compared to 100 on Saturday. Currently, the onions supplied across city markets are the ones harvested in January and the compiled stock will last only till October-November.
