Next month, NESCO Grounds, Goregaon, will turn into a racing track, but only for remote-controlled (RC) cars.

The race, the first of its kind in India, called Wheels on Fire boasts of 45 registered participants and the numbers are increasing steadily. "We haven't publicised the event, but managed to receive 3,000 responses through an announcement on Facebook and the website of BRC Hobbies, a store dealing in remote-controlled equipment," said Merwin Fernandes, the brain behind this project, who works with the event management company organising the race. With the event scheduled for June 5 and 6, preparations are on in full swing. A 3,600 sq metre area has been taken on rent, half of which will be dedicated to put up the tracks. Moiz Arsiwala of BRC Hobbies said, "We have a company racing track in Panvel, where we were planning to hold the race initially, but Merwin suggested we keep it within city limits." However, racing RC cars is not a child's play. "This is an event for racing fanatics, not kids. Cars will average at 90 kmph and the racetrack has obstacles. It'll be like playing a simulation F1 car race, except it'll all be real," said Merwin.
