A Congress leader and former Latur mayor has demanded the Marathwada Rail Coach Factory in the city be renamed after former Maharashtra chief minister and son-of-the-soil late Vilasrao Deshmukh. The local unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, however, opposed the demand saying the factory has been built due to the efforts of the Union government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and that Deshmukh had no role to play. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday inaugurated a widened Kopri road bridge on the railway tracks in Thane district, an official said. The overbridge (ROB) has been widened to 4-plus-4 configuration from the present 2-plus-2 lanes, which would give relief to motorists using the arterial Eastern Express Highway to travel from Mumbai to Thane and beyond, as per the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Police in Maharashtra`s Ratnagiri district have recorded statements of at least 30 persons in connection with the alleged murder of a local journalist by a land dealer in Rajapur city. Shashikant Warishe (48) was mowed down by an SUV allegedly driven by land dealer Pandharinath Amberkar on Monday. Warishe died in hospital the next day. It has been alleged that Amberkar, now arrested and booked for murder, used to threaten any person who opposed land acquisition for a proposed refinery in the area. (PTI)

Police in Maharashtra`s Ratnagiri district have recorded statements of at least 30 persons in connection with the alleged murder of a local journalist by a land dealer in Rajapur city. The Bombay High Court on Thursday dismissed a public interest litigation filed against Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar for their remarks on judiciary and the collegium system for appointment of judges. The plea filed by Bombay Lawyers Association had claimed Rijiju and Dhankhar showed lack of faith in the Constitution with their remarks and conduct. It had sought for orders to restrain Dhankhar from discharging duty as the vice president, and Rijiju from discharging duty as cabinet minister for the central government. (PTI)

The incident took place at around 1.40 am at Gaimukh on Ghodbunder Road when the three men and two women, in the age group of 45 to 65 years, were returning home in Mira Road area here from Karad, Thane Municipal Corporation`s regional disaster management cell chief Avinash Sawant said.
