<p>On May 1, 1960, following the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, the state of Bombay was bifurcated into two separate linguistic states: Maharashtra, predominantly Marathi-speaking, and Gujarat, predominantly Gujarati-speaking.&nbsp;</p>
